Burgas-Bulgaria - Culture
Bulgaria is one of the most understated vacation spots in the world. Although small in size it is only slightly larger in landmass than Portugal but still smaller than North Korea. Bulgaria is bordered by five other government states, Romania to the north, Serbia and the Republic of Macedonia to the west, and Greece and Turkey to the South. Its eastern borders are lined by the waters of the Black Sea.
The Port of Burgas, situated in Burgas City, is the biggest sea port in Bulgaria. The District Museum of History was founded in 1925, it is one of the most impressive tourist sights in the city. Today, it houses a rich collection of archeological items dating back to the old colonies along the Black Sea coast. The Ethnographic Museum is also of particular attraction to foreigners for its exhibitions of masks and koukeri, traditional costumes, fabrics and embroidery. The museum is in a house built in 1873 and later declared a cultural monument. The Museum of Nature and Science is another place of interest to visitors of the city. It contains over 1,200 exhibits of insects and reptiles and more than 140 species of fish, plants growing in the district of Strandzha, protected and endemic species. Another great place is the Art Gallery, established in 1945 with halls exhibiting foreign and of Bulgarian artists' works, and icons painted by renowned Renaissance artists. Among the many church buildings, the one to visit is the St. Cyril and Methodist Cathedral, situated near the marketplace. The cathedral is interesting for its fantastic frescos and wooden altar.
