Cyprus - Culture

Welcome to Cyprus a place where East and West collide. The Republic of Cyprus is a Mediterranean island deeply imbedded in Greek and Turkish history. The official language here is Greek but English is widely spoken. Visitors to this island will enjoy rugged mountains, sandy beaches, amazing architecture, medieval castles and quaint villages. In Cyprus there is never a shortage of things to do and places to see.

August is the peak of the tourist season in Cyprus, although a mild climate throughout the year makes this inviting whenever you choose to visit. If you are looking for a beachside holiday, Phinikoudes Beach is one of the most famous on the island. Water sports are featured strongly all around the Cyprus coast. The seas are crystal clear perfect for diving and snorkelling. Windsurfing and sailing can also be enjoyed year round. Cyprus serves as a base for cruise ships that also visit other nearby countries.

Besides beaches and water sports, Cyprus offers a world of culture and sightseeing. Visit the amazing Roman villas and admire their exquisite floor mosaics depicting scenes from mythology. These villas are arguably the best in the eastern Mediterranean. Here you will also find the historical underground Tombs of the Kings. These fabulous tombs are carved out of solid rock and decorated with Doric pillars.

In Cyprus, you can also enjoy an ancient Greek play performed in a cliff side Roman amphitheatre with the most spectacular view of the sea. If you appreciate fine art, you will find many examples of Byzantine art which have survived on the island. See these fine artifacts in many of the islands painted churches. Ten of the churches have been listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In Cyprus you can also enjoy the magnificent pageantry of Greek Orthodox religious festivals whose origins go back thousands of years. Another must see, is the Cyprus Archaeological Museum featuring a superb collection of objects spanning the island's history. The complete collection includes pottery, coins, jewellery, tombstones and statues.

Cyprus offers several themed routes for visitors to tour the island. Each route has its own cultural focus. For example, one route takes you in the footsteps of the island's famed goddess Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. Aphrodite also was thought to be the protector of Cyprus. Take this tour and wander through layers of history, culture and mythology. Here you will learn about Aphrodite's birth, her character and the rituals connected with her cult. Take a tour around the islands famous wineries. On this trip you can indulge in some wine tasting, or sample other grape based delicacies. The route features a visit to an old monastery and a wine museum.

Take another themed route and see the ten famous Byzantine churches on UNESCO's World Heritage List. This route will take you through the Troodos mountain areas and will allow you to see some of the islands greatest countryside. Once there, taxi service is plentiful or there are three types of buses that can help you move around, transurban buses link all towns on a daily basis and with frequent routes, rural buses that link many villages with the nearest city and urban buses that link different areas within the cities and operate frequently during the day. During the busy summer period, urban buses in many areas extend their service through the evenings.
