Czech Republic - Culture

The Czech Republic is located in Central Europe, bordering Austria, Germany, Poland and Slovakia. Prague is the capital. The Czech Republic consists of the historical territories of Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia. You can easily travel to all parts of this country by car, bus or railway.

If you are an admirer of European architecture over the last thousand years, the Czech Republic prides itself on its magnificent Gothic, Baroque, Renaissance, Art Nouveau and Cubist buildings.

If you travel to Prague, be sure to visit the monumental complex of the Clementinum. In the 11th century, the Church of St. Clement was here. A century later, the Dominicans took over the church and turned it into a monastery. In 1555, the Jesuits came and bought the building of the monastery together with the attached grounds. They spent the next 200 years building a Jesuit college here. The complex consists of five buildings around five courtyards. They comprise of the new Church of St. Clement, the Church of the Holy Savior, the Convent building, the Chapel of Mirrors and the new Jesuit College. Famous architects, such as Carlo Lurago, Francesco Lurago, Giovanni Domenico Orsi, Paul Ignaz Bayer, Franciscus Maxmilian Kanka and Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer worked on the project. The National Library has been seated here for the past 200 years. It features the rarest and most interesting prints and books published on the territory of Bohemia since 1807.

The Czech Republic is often considered a superpower in terms of the number of sights included in the list of World Heritage sites. Besides castles, old buildings and museums, the Czech Republic has many interesting engineering sights. As a tribute to the mining industry of Ostrava, there is the Michal Colliery, which dates back to 1843. The Colliery is a significant industrial area which owes its appearance to the reconstruction completed in 1915, by the architect František Fiala. The area includes a collection of electric mining machinery dating back to the dawn of the electric era.

Also featured here are a mining bath, a former lamp house, transport bridges and a mine shaft and steel cage. A tour through the facility allows visitors to follow the same path as the working miners did. Operations at the mine stopped in 1994. The mine is now a national cultural monument. The main building is often used for exhibitions, theatre performances and other events.

About 95 percent of the people here speak the Czech language so it may be worth hiring a translator to understand the Czech language, customs and culture to make the most of your time here.
