The northern region of Liberec was recently cited by a Czech newspaper as the best in the country for overall quality of life. Residents and visitors here will enjoy quiet and peaceful surroundings with just enough activities and things to do. The Region is in Northern Czech Republic near the borders of Germany and Poland. It is made up of the town of Liberec, Jablonec nad Nisou, Semily, and Ceská Lípa. The Region occupies 4% of the entire Czech Republic, making it the second smallest region in the country after Prague. Approximately 430 000 people live here.
The region is a major skiing destination. It is home to several ski schools and is a favourite spot for all sorts of winter sports. Besides being at the centre of many northern Czech mountain ranges, the region also is home to the Bohemian Paradise, one of the most remarkable places in the Czech Republic.
The area is characterised by a number of rock towns including the magnificent Prachovské skály sandstone rock town which rises at the town of Jicín. Other sandstone formations are located near the town of Mnichovo Hradište. The main symbol of Bohemian Paradise is the ruin of a medieval castle, characteristic at a distance by its amazing silhouette. Several castles and chateaux were built in the area around Hrubá Skála. The Maloskalsko Region also boasts of several smaller sandstone towns. This area also features many bizarre rock formations and the old castle ruins which rise above the valley of the Jizera River.
Centrum Babylon is a massive entertainment complex in Liberec. It is the largest covered entertainment complex in the Czech Republic. Exceptional entertainment and relaxation for the whole family is offered here year round. The area also offers Aquapark, a themed indoor water paradise. Lunapark is an indoor complex with attractions for children as well as adults. It is designed like an old fashioned Czech fete. It also is open year round.
The Liberec region also features an aquarium, zoological and botanical gradens. The botanical gardens here were founded in 1876. Visitors here will appreciate a spectacular collection of orchids which stay in in bloom year round. The gardens also feature carnivorous plants, the oldest camellias in Europe, and the oldest bonsai tree in Europe. Altogether, visitors can enjoy as many as 7,500 species of tropical and subtropical flora on display in the gardens´ hothouses and another 1,500 plant species in the outdoor areas. Individual pavilions in the gardens contain collections of tropical plants from countries of the Old and New World. They also feature smaller collections of plants such as ferns and tropical water lilies. For cultural activities and amazing architecture, visit the F.X. Salda Theatre in Liberec.
