Prague - Culture

The Czech Republic is a modern country with a rich history. It offers a wide choice of cultural opportunities, especially in its main city of Prague. Prague has often been referred to as one of the most beautiful in the world. It is sectioned off into residential quarters dating back to the Middle Ages. These sections are, the Old Town (Staré Mesto) , the New Town (Nové Mesto) , the Lesser Town (Malá Strana) and the Castle area (Hradcany) . Together, these quarters create the historical centre of Prague. They are also listed as national heritage monuments through the international cultural heritage organisation known as UNESCO.

The most significant building in the Old Town is the Old Town Hall. It was built in 1338. It was constructed from a block of five, originally independently standing buildings. Most of these buildings are Gothic and Renaissance in appearance. The Old Town Astrological Clock, the work of clock maker Mikulas of Kadan is a unique attraction here. The clock was made in 1364. It is an astrological clock which still functions and enchants visitors. Every hour the clock becomes an exhibition of the twelve Apostles, who gradually make an appearance one at a time in two windows above the astronomical part of the clock. On the other side of the town square, the High Gothic Church of Týn is another interesting place to see. The Gothic Old School building stands in front of the church.

Prague's Jewish Quarter , later known as the Josefov, is located near the Old Town Square. The quarter was established during the 12th century. Many of the original buildings were demolished at the end of the 19th century. Later, the entire area was replaced by new housing blocks. Some synagogues, the town hall and the cemetery were preserved from their original state. The Staronova synagogue, built in 1270, is the oldest preserved synagogue in Europe. Old Jewish artefacts are housed and on display in many of these old buildings. The Old Jewish Cemetery is another extraordinary monument of international significance. It was established in the 15th century and features 12,000 gravestones. The cemetery was used until 1787.

The world famous Charles Bridge is an incredible High Gothic monument which was built in 1357. It is the most significant bridge construction in the Czech Republic. The bridge entrance is protected by two towers located at each end. There is an awesome gallery of 30 statues on the bridge, some dating back to the late 1600s. The manmade island of Kampa is located on one side of the Charles Bridge. The island features an old mill, several buildings from the Romantic era, a scenic park and several Renaissance and Baroque buildings on the northern part of the island. Many Czech artists once lived on the island of Kampa.

The city of Prague also features many old church buildings, palaces and gardens. Also worth seeing is the shopping centre Wenceslas Square, located on the other bank of the Vltava River. It was originally a horse market, established in 1348. Today the square is 750 metres long and 60 metres wide. The original buildings from the Middle Ages have been gradually overshadowed by modern ones. Part of the square is dominated by the National Museum. Near the lower part of the square, the National Theatre is located. The nearby area is filled with charming arcades and beutiful buildings. The Art Nouveau Municipal House is also nearby. Prague offers numerous casinos an multiplex cinemas. The Prague Zoological Gardens also offer visitors a great opportunity to relax and enjoy the beauty of the city.
