South Bohemia - Culture

South Bohemia is made up mostly of quaint fishing villages, historical sights and natural beauty. The village of Putim, for example, features an interesting tourist trail which leads to the banks of the Režabinec Pond, which is a part of the national nature reserve of Režabinec. The pond, pool and fields are an important nesting and breeding ground for numerous bird species. In nearby Písek, there is an old Gothic stone bridge from the 13th century. It is the oldest preserved bridge in the Czech Republic. The bridge is still in use. It spans over the river in Pisek. The village of Kestrany is located around the bend. There are two fortresses here, the upper fortress which dates back to the 13th century and the lower fortress, from the 14th , which has a three story tower. You can also rent a bicycle in the town of Pisek and ride it to visit the fortresses.

The mountains lie to the south of these villages. The road from Strakonice towards the south leads through the enchanting Czech mountains, the Sumava National Park. The entrance to the park is in Wimperk, a mountain town in the valley which also features an old castle which houses the Museum of the National Park's Administration and Natural Reserve. Here you will find plenty of history about the region. The village of Zadov-Churánov is a popular winter destination. Here you will find a sports hub offering a number of ski runs and cross country trails, cable cars with seats and a ski jump bridge.

In summer, be sure to make a trip to the nearby village of Stachy, in the foothills of the Sumuva National Park. This village features unique wooden Šumavan houses. There also is a rare mushroom reservation located directly on the square with boletus mushrooms growing all around. The historical town of Prachatice also is located in this region. Prachatice's 16th century Gothic Renaissance appearance has been virtually untouched for years. A majority of the buildings here feature unique graphite decorations. They are located on the Large Square in the centre of the village.

The town of Horní Planá lies on the left bank of the Lipinski Dam. There is a local tourist information office on the bank near the dam. You should also visit the nearby family home of the Austrian prose writer Adalbert Stifter. Another point of interest in South Bohemia is the Cistercian monastery of Vyšší Brod, which is a national cultural heritage site. It was established in 1259. It is an extensive complex which contains many valuable items. The monastery art gallery, the library and a branch of the Post Museum are all open to the public.

Another must see in this region is the Czech-Krumlov fortress and castle complex, one of the largest in Central Europe. Forty buildings and palaces were built here over six centuries. This Complex includes five courtyards and gardens. The Baroque Castle Theatre, built here in the 18th century, is one of the oldest and most preserved theatres in Europe. There are 300 rooms and salons in the complex. The art gallery and masquerade salon are a few of the most beautiful rooms. An impressive fountain with statues can be found in the castle gardens as well as the the Bellarie villa.
