UK - England

There are thousands of world-class attractions and activities in England. Amuse the family at a top theme park, dance in the streets at a Caribbean carnival, or simply soak up British history at an historic castle. Whatever area you’re in, you’ll find constant entertainment of all kinds.

England has an amazing array of outdoor activities available year-round. Test your handicap with a round of golf on one of the country’s award-winning golf courses. The coasts and inland waterways are excellent for fishing. The chalk streams in Hampshire are renowned worldwide for fly fishing and the rivers in Yorkshire are full of trout and grayling. Many other areas of England, such as the Lake District (Cumbria) are also teeming with fish.

There are thousands of kilometers of nature walks with picnic sites and way marked trails criss-crossing the country. Enjoy a tranquil walk along the River Dove, surrounded by the remains of ancient coral reefs, which rear up in strange shapes to form the region of Dovedale. Writer Izaac Walton made this trout-filled river famous in his classic book The Complete Angler (1653). He is buriedin Winchester Cathedral.

Another great walk is the Pennine Way, which follows the spine of England north from Edale. The east of England is a varied region offering walks for all ages and abilities, from a gentle stroll along the Suffolk coast to a long-distance trek through the Chilterns. Walk through Epping Forest and hear the story of highwayman Dick Turpin or head for Norfolk Broads National Park, a history-rich area great for hiking and camping. This area has many great holiday attractions for the boat and sailing lovers including famous broads like Ranworth broad, Salhouse, Hickling, Barton and many others including Oulton broad which is renowned for its power boat racing. Don’t forget the East coast for your family seaside holiday. Great beach holidays can be found at Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft but Brancaster and Southwold are a joy to behold with beautiful traditional rental accommodation and fantastic seafood dining.

England’s surprisingly warm summers are a well-kept secret; visitors shouldn’t miss a trip to a golden beach such as Woolacombe or Newquay. In July and August temperatures can exceed 33°C. Winter turns the water bitterly cold, but visitors can participate in a New Year’s Eve tradition and throw themselves in for an invigorating dip.

England is historically a strong boating and sailing country, and all types of sailing are up for grabs. With 402km of coastline,  Norfolk and Suffolk are two of the best regions. The southeastern coast – Brighton, Dover and Eastbourne – are also popular, as is the Solent, between Southampton and the Isle of Wight. Devon and Cornwall are windy areas and so perfect for yachting, and England’s lakes are excellent spots for beginners, with vast stretches of water such as Ulswater and Windermere.

England is a very old country, and boasts a unique history. It has 2500 museums and galleries, so history buffs will never be short of something to do. Majestic Stonehenge, 13km north of Salisbury, is a must-see, as is its lesser-known cousin Avesbury, 25km further north, which has its ancient stone circles. There is a wide range of holiday property available to rent from country cottages, farmhouses, town houses in historic locations to beach cottages and apartments.

When it comes to fun, England is full of exciting adventures for the whole family. Feel the rush from a roller coaster at Alton Towers or travel back in time to watch knights in shining armour joust at Warwick Castle. Chessington is the ideal theme park for adventurous families. Ninety per cent of its rides and attractions are suitable for children, and there is a host of exciting rides for the more daring thrill-seeker, such as Dragon’s Fury and the Vampire coasters.
