Alsace

Alsace feels distinctly different to the rest of France due to its history of German and French competing claims to the region. Alsace has been determinedly French since 1944 but feels like a world apart – enhanced by its geographical separation. The magnificent Vosges mountains form its natural border with the rest of France, while it is separated from Germany by the Rhine.

The to’ing and fro’ing between German and French ownership has led to an interesting cultural mix of the two, but with a uniquely Alsatian twist. Meat eaters will love the regional dish of Choucroute (a great pile of pork and sausages on top of an Alsatian version of Sauerkraut).

Head to Strasbourg, Alsace’s capital, for its magnificent cathedral, bustling, friendly atmosphere and great shopping. Wine lovers can explore Alsace’s winding countryside while sampling the region’s Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Sylvaner.
