Poitou-Charentes - Luxury
Poitou-Charentes is a western region of France known for its rolling hills, beautiful islands and sandy beaches. For visitors who enjoy excellent brandy, the area is also famous for its cognac and ample vineyards.
Angouleme offers visitors both medieval and modern architecture. Visitors can stop at Angouleme's Cathedrale St-Pierre to see its magnificent Romanesque façade and 70 stone statues depicting the “last judgment.”
Cognac is a town in Poitou-Charentes which is famous for its brandy. Visitors can stop in at local cognac houses and sample the region's famous brandy. Tours of local cognac warehouses are also available. Even the air in Cognac contains brandy; 3% of the town's brandy evaporates each year, with locals calling this the angels' share. Cognac is also home to the Otard Cognac. The Otard Cognac is the birth place of the Renaissance monarch Francois I. The Otard Cognac now is a museum offering information and the history of Cognac where visitors can sample or purchase cognac.
At La Rochelle, visitors can see one of the leading yachting centres in France. Numerous beautiful boats are located right in La Rochelle's picturesque harbour. For a great view of the harbour, visitors can climb the harbour's towers, the Tour St-Nicholas and the Tour de la Chaine which bear witness to their time as a primitive port.
The Musee Ste-Croix in Poitiers is home to many fascinating archaeological discoveries, regional crafts and paintings from the 15th to 19th centuries. The Musee Rupert-de-Chievres features exhibits of Renaissance furniture, ceramics and Old Master paintings.
