Germany - Cultural

Germany is home to many museums, art galleries and fine arts venues where visitors can experience the country's rich and unique culture, architecture, art, music and drama performances.

The Sammlung Frieder Burda in Baden-Baden is home to one of Germany's largest collections of modern art. The art is exhibited in a new, spacious building designed by Richard Meier. The gallery's main focus is the works of postwar German expressionists. The Judisches Museum Berlin is one of the most stunning museums in Europe. The museum was designed by the famous architect Daniel Liebskind and is called “the silver lightning bolt.” The inside of the museum is designed to make visitors feel uneasy and disoriented, a reminder of the emotions felt by the Jews exiled in World War II. The museum includes many symbolic architectural features, including a vast hollow running through the centre of the museum and a Holocaust Void, a dark, windowless chamber, to symbolise all that was lost. The museum's exhibits focus on Jewish life, the effects of the Holocaust and the rebuilding of the Jewish community in Germany after World War II.

Dusseldorf is well known for its classical music. The city was actually once home to famous composers including Brahms, Mendelssohn, and Schumann. Visitors can enjoy classical concerts presented by the Dusseldorf Symphony at its home, Tonhalle. Tonhalle is one of Germany's most successful modern concert halls.

St. Mary's Church is located across from the Rathaus in Lubeck. The church is built upon the highest point in the Alstadt, and features beautiful architecture including flying buttresses and towering windows. Although many of the churches works of art were destroyed in World War II, after the fires were extinguished, earlier paintings were discovered on the churches walls and clerestory. The church's bells fell during a World War II air raid and are now embedded in the floor.
