The Aegean Islands - Cultural

The Aegean Islands offer many cultural experiences to visitors. Those visiting the Aegean Islands can enjoy a trip to one of the islands' many museums or art galleries. Visitors can enjoy exhibits featuring archaeological artifacts, watercolours depicting historical daily life, or bronze sculptures.

The Archaeological Museum in Limnos is located in a building which was once a Turkish Commandery during the Ottoman occupation. The building has been recently renovated and is now home to many ancient artifacts from the island's archaeological sites including Poliochni, the Ifestia and the sanctuary of Kaviri.

The Tehophilos Museum in Mitlini is located in the former home of the well known folk artist Hatzimichalis Theophilos. The museum contains many of Theophilos's works, which include primitive watercolours depicting daily Greek life and local landscapes. The museum also includes some photographs of the artist dressed as Alexander the Great.

The Theriade Library and Museum of Modern Art in Mitlini is home of Stratis Eleftheriadis, a prominent art critic and publisher who was raised in Lesvos (Lesbos) and later moved to Paris. The library displays copies of Eleftheriadis's published works and his personal collection of art by Picasso, Matisse, Miro, Chagall and other modern artists.

The Archeological Museum in Vathikarlovassi is located in two buildings near the town's harbour. The museum's newer building is home to many sculptures. The museum's most remarkable work is a large statue of a boy standing 16 feet tall. The museum also features a large collection of various bronze votives found at the Heraion.
