The Archaeological Museum in Thessaloniki is home to exhibits dedicated to Thessaloniki's history and ancient culture. The museum's stunning artifacts include delicate Hellenistic glass, Roman mosaics, and archaeological finds from around the area. Visitors can see a beautiful portrait bust of the 4th century Emperor Galerius. The museum's shop sells postcards, guidebooks and other souvenirs.
The Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki is one of the most renowned Byzantine museums in all of Greece. The museum's exhibits display the development of the Byzantine culture from the early Roman era through to the fall of Constantinople in 1453. Many of the exhibits focus on early Christian life and development. Some of the museum's most impressive exhibits include the 4th to 6th century barrel vaulted tombs, frescoes depicting scenes from the Old and New Testament and ancient mosaics and marble sculptures.
Central Macedonia is home to many impressive art galleries. Some of the area's art galleries include Apothiki, Kalfayan, and Terracotta. Terracotta features works from some of Greece's most famous modern artists and many local up and coming artists. Several of the area's museums also feature art exhibits, including the Gallery of Fine Arts, Germanou and the National Museum of Contemporary Art.
The Museum of Ancient Greek, Byzantine, and Post Byzantine Musical Instruments features many elaborately detailed reproductions of historical string and wind instruments. The museum also includes photographs of instruments, ancient vase paintings and Byzantine manuscripts. The museum features music playing softly in the background. The museum also features a café and occasionally hosts concerns.
