The castle in Ioannina features massive stone walls that were completely rebuilt in 1815. The area inside the castle's walls is now a peaceful residential area. The area's Romaniote Jewish population was almost entirely exterminated by the Nazis in World War II, and there is now a monument at Karamanli and Soutsou streets which commemorates those from the Jewish community who tragically lost their lives.
The Municipal Museum features many artifacts of the Greek, Turkish and Jewish communities which lived together in Ioannina from 1400 until 1611. An inscription over the door reads “There is only one God, Allah, and Muhammed is his prophet.”
The island village of Nissi features quaint lakeside cottages and flowering courtyards. The island is home to several monasteries which can be visited throughout the day. The village also features several restaurants which serve frogs' legs, eel and carp.
Visitors can stop for a gourmet meal at Gastra in Ioannina. The restaurant features food which is cooked slowly over a bed of hot coals, with meals slowly roasting in a large iron pot. Reservations are necessary since the Gastra is very popular.
Antique collectors can discover rare finds at the Papzotos Zikos in Ioannina, which has a large collection of the famous Ali Pasha's belongings.
The Averoff Gallery in Metsovo displays an impressive art collection of 19th and 20th century paintings which depict historical scenes and local landscapes. The collection includes works from major Greek artists including Nikos Ghikas and Alekos Fassianos.
