Peloponnisos - Cultural
Peloponnisos is home to many intriguing museums featuring ancient Greek art and cultural artifacts. Visitors to Peloponnisos can also enjoy a fine arts performance at one of the area's beautiful theatres.
The Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation opened in 1981, its museum features an impressive collection of Greek costumes. The museum has won the prestigious European Museum of the Year Award and features over 25,000 items, three full floors, and a snack bar. Visitors can purchase pottery, weavings, music CDs and more in the gift shop.
The Archaeological Museum features displays from local sites which include pottery, jewellery and Mycenaean idols. The museum also features a stunning bronze Mycenaean suit of armour. The Military Museum features old photographs and artifacts from many of the country's wars, including the Greek wars, the War of Independence and World War II. The museum offers free admission and is open year round.
Visitors can see classical performances at the ancient theatre in Epidaurus. Performances generally start at approximately 9:00 p.m. and are given on Saturdays and Sundays from June until September. Many of the theatre's performances are given by the National Theatre of Greece.
The Archaeological Museum in Sparta features a magnificent 5th century marble bust of Leonidas. The museum is also home to several fine Roman mosaics and many objects found at the Mycenaean sites near Sparta. Visitors can also relax in the museum's rose garden which is decorated with beautiful Roman statutes.
