Lake Balaton, in the Central Hungary Region, is the largest lake in Central Europe. It's also a popular summer destination for tourists. For more outdoors adventure, try the Kapolnapuszta Reserve in the Balaton Uplands National Park. This park is home to the traditional Hungarian buffalo, first brought over by ancient Asiatic tribes and plays a vital role in the survival of the species.

The nearby town of Szántódpuszta is home to well preserved 18th and 19th century farm buildings, barns, workshops and a Baroque church. You can also visit a grand abbey church at the pinnacle of the Tihany peninsula. At Tapolca, you can spend the day touring the lakes and caves. If you enjoy crafts, you may want to visit the town of Herend, where the fine porcelain made there is internationally known.

Throughout the region you will be able to tour the atmospheric wine cellars. Many of these fine cellars are located along the volcanic hills of the northern shore. The Balaton region also hosts many festivals throughout the year.
