The Neo Gothic Church of Matthais Roman is a Catholic church consecrated to Our Lady (Nagyboldogasszony) was historically used for coronation ceremonies and royal weddings. Originally built in Gothic style, the church was reconstructed several times. The neo Gothic architecture evident today was created at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The church features a very old tower to the north. The south gate is known as Mary's Gate. The south tower is a 60 metre high structure built under King Matthias. It was completed in 1470. The massive tower bears the King's raven coat of arms, the church was named after this particular king.
During the time of Turkish rule, this church was turned into a mosque. The Matthias Chalice is the most valued relic still on display. Also on display is the 17th century Black Madonna. It was carved from pure ebony. The statue is an exact copy of the famous sculpture in Loretto. The church treasury and crypt are also open to visitors. The church regularly hosts concerts and other community events.
Another place to visit in Budapest is the famous Citadel, designed by Emánuel Zita and Ferenc Kasselik. The fortress was built in the 1800s and contained 60 canons aiming out from every angle of the building. Following the Battle with the Hapsburgs in 1867, the Hungarians demanded the destruction of the Citadel. The main gate was damaged in 1897 after the garrison troops left. The remains of the fortress were left untouched until the 1960's when the decision was made to turn it into a tourist centre. Looking out from the terrace and the walls of the Citadel, visitors today can enjoy a wonderful view of the city.
Dance fans will love a visit to the National Dance Theatre in Budapest. Performances here include ballet, contemporary and folk. Some of the most highly acclaimed Hungarian and foreign dancers perform here on a regular basis. The old theatre building opened originally in 1787 to provide entertainment for public servants. The first theatrical company performed here in 1790. Ludwig von Beethoven gave a chamber music concert on at this historic theatre on May 7th, 1980. Today the theatre's auditorium seats 254 people. There is also a dining hall designed for an additional 100 people. The theatre also features an art gallery.
