Leinster - Culture

The image of Leinster is that of a highly developed region featuring modern towns, a highly cultivated countryside and a well settled coastline. Nearly 1.9 million people live there, that's over half of Ireland's total population! The traditional flag of Leinster features a golden harp on a dark green cloth background.

Leinster is located in the eastern part of Ireland. It stretches from the border of Northern Ireland to the south east corner of the island. The Leinster region also goes inland to the great River Shannon. Leinster is probably best seen as a series of mini regions. Each area is self contained in a local geography, landscape and history.

One highlight of a visit to this region of Ireland is the fascinating Boyne Valley, with its massive Norman ruins and bustling town of Drogheda on the coast. Almost every era of Irish history has left traces here in this rich and ancient valley. The passage graves of Brú na Bóinne are one example of the many historic locations scattered throughout this region. Another place to visit is Newgrange, the greatest and most stunning Neolithic monument in Ireland and in all of Europe. The monument is over 5,000 years old. The inner chamber of this intriguing structure is fully illuminated by the rays of the rising sun on two days either side of the winter solstice which occurs here on December 21. The monument also is decorated with mystical spirals and other unique images. Over time, the monument has lost little of its profoundly spiritual feel, a mystique often noted by those who visit it.

In this area the old Celtic monastery of Monasterboice is located at the ruins of the great Cistercian Abbey of Melifont. The battlefield of the Boyne, which helped shape modern Irish history, is also nearby. Meanwhile, the feel of antiquity has a physical presence in the numerous Stone and Bronze Age remains scattered throughout the countryside and small villages all along the coast. Some of Ireland's most beautiful beaches are located here.

The entire Leinster region is marked by its extensive Norman heritage which is best reflected in the neat stone villages and the numerous castle ruins of Celt and Norman origin.A bit to the west, the town of Tipperary, is rich in culture, music and sports. Tipperary is home to the great Rock of Cashel, a unique religious and historic site. In Tipperary, there is a spectacular group of medieval buildings set in an outcrop of limestone. One of these intriguing buildings is a round tower. Also located here is a Romanesque chapel, a cathedral and the restored hall of the Vicar's Choral.

We can offer vacation properties located close to the cultural activities. This makes it possible for you to enjoy all of the local festivals, art, museums and theatres while having all the comforts of “home.” Guests may enjoy the luxurious accommodation available in one of our beautiful houses, cabins, or apartments.
