Campania - Culture
Capri is located deep in the heart of Campania. It is often referred to as southern Italy's finest jewel. It is one of the most popular of all tourist destinations in Italy, combining stunning scenery, rich culture and ancient history. Located about three miles off the coast of Naples (also called Napoli), Capri is an enchanting island with craggy cliffs, white beaches, olive groves and fragrant lemon trees. The coastline is dotted with countless caves and surrounded by reefs of various sizes and shapes. You can reach the island by hydrofoil or by ferry.
Capri has two main villages, Capri Town and Anacapri. Capri Town lies on the eastern half of the island. There is a tramway going from the dock up to the Capri Town where you'll discover the famous Piazzetta Square in the centre of town. The square is just like an outdoor living room. It is crowded day and night. It is a great place to shop, enjoy a drink or taste some local cuisine. The town also offers a good walking tour. The tour features garden terraces, historic churches, and local villas.
Anacapri, is a very steep climb uphill from Capri Town. In Anacapri you can take a chair lift to Monte Solaro, the highest point on the island. Here you can relax and enjoy a breathtaking view of the Bay of Naples. You can also see the city of Naples (also called Napoli) and Mt. Vesuvius in the distance. If you are feeling super energetic, you may want to climb the Scala Fenicia, the steep path linking Anacapri to Capri Town. This treacherous path was first created by Greek colonists thousands of years ago. It is so steep that it is actually a staircase with over 500 steps.
There are many small grottos on the island. The most famous is the Grotta Azzurra (also known as the Blue Grotto). This grotto was named for the brilliance of the light reflection through the nearby waters. Known to the ancients, the beautiful grotto was lost to the world until an artist stumbled upon it in 1826. Inside the cavern, light refraction shines brightly to create incredible colours and a magical atmosphere. Emperor Augustus discovered Capri in 29 BC. Both Julius and Tiberious Caesar reportedly built summer villas in Capri. Since then millions of tourists have followed.
Naples is part of Campania also. It is one of Europe's most densely populated cities. In spite of being chaotic, overcrowded and noisy, Naples is full of charisma and charm. The city features narrow streets overhung with endless rows of washing, ancient churches, a medieval university and hundreds of cafés, bars, and restaurants.
