Friuli-Venezia Giulia - Culture
Friuli-Venezia Giulia shares borders with Austria in the north and Slovenia in the east. The region derives its name from several provinces. It is divided into Gorizia, Pordenone, Trieste and Udine provinces.
The Friuli region is well saturated with Austrian and Slovenian influences. There are many historical differences that make this region unique. It offers an exceptional variety of rustic, historical and cultural scenery. The mountains offer greatness and serenity. Beautiful natural scenery can also be enjoyed on its shores and all along the coastal area of Friuli-Anezia Giulia.
Trieste is the capital of Friuli. The Trieste province is tucked away in a corner of a very old railway station. There are many museums here. The town possesses collections of great artistic value and historical significance. The streets and squares of this old city are also surrounded by marvellous Roman buildings mixed with 18th century architecture. Trieste is the major seaport with several shipyards in the city. It is a commercial and industrial centre. It serves as the base for pipelines from Eastern Europe.
Trieste is considered a city of intellectuals. The San Marco in Via Battisti is a unique literary café. It was traditionally used to satisfy the literary likings of its residents. Drinks are only served at the many marble tables. Newspapers are available and everybody speaks quietly to avoid disturbing others as they read. Also nearby, Gorizia is a small province on the Isonzo River and the Slovenian border. It is mainly industrial and commercial with much of its economy stemming from manufacturing textiles, leather goods, processed food and machines. The ancient Castle di Gorizia is a lasting symbol of the old city. It stores very impressive collections of Renaissance, Baroque, and 18th century furniture, paintings and sculptures. Also in the castle, there is an important exhibition of pewter, potteries, and armoires.
Each year this region offers many special events. Some are linked to festivals of the Catholic Church, while others are related to the changing seasons. Throughout Italy, every little village has its own wonderful festivals. Many are associated with the harvest, especially wine. The rest of these events tend to be historical. Re-enactments linked to jousting and costumed cavalcades are often part of Italy's special events. In Italy, art and culture, the pleasures of good food and music, traditional crafts and expressions of folklore through art, opera and theatre abound. The calendar of festivals and events in this region is always full.
