Liguria - Culture

Liguria is frequently called the “Italian Riviera”. It is one of Italy's smallest regions yet it features the most fashionable resorts and serves as the country's largest and liveliest commercial ports. Liguria is a land of endless seaside resorts, rocky coves and cosy inlets.  It's a place where famous people like Ezra Pound, Lord Byron, Shelley and Ernest Hemingway loved to visit. Today it hosts a multitude of filmmakers who seem drawn to the unique atmosphere of romance, adventure, sophistication and elegance.

Liguiria is situated in between Tuscany and France. It is divided into two parts: the western coastline, Riviera Ponente, which offers a thin strip of coastal plain stretching to the French border, and the eastern coastline, Riviera Levante, which is a rugged and natural coast descending into the sea.

Between the two coastlines, is the capital and largest port of Genoa. This city is known for its refined palaces. It is also known as the birthplace of Christopher Columbus. The city was selected as the European Capital of Culture for the year 2004. The city features grand towers of the past in the Park of Walls. It also has old fortresses and thick walls which used to protect the city. Nearby are simple fisherman villages, ancient gardens and elegant homes which sit against a backdrop of high cliffs and  romantic vistas along the gulf.

The city also offers modernisation. New cultural centres have been built in the old abandoned dockyards. They give new life to the maritime flavour of the city. Genoa also is a city for families and children who can enjoy the innovative Aquarium, the largest in Europe. The City of Children also is a popular spot for families. It features an interactive, educational playground.

Special events keep the rich heritage and local culture of this special region alive. Every other year the town of Savona exhibits a procession featuring precious wooden “caskets”. These wooden treasures are sculpted from 17th and 18th century compositions. The event draws tourists and natives together for a rather unique parade. Elsewhere in the region, there are springtime celebrations with floral tributes and a multitude of village festivals nearly every day in the summer.

Liguria's one hundred and seventy museums house glorious collections, and priceless treasures. In this region, one small museum is devoted entirely to filigree jewellery that was imported from Byzantines. Europe's most important museum of oriental art is in nearby Genoa. It is a reminder of the areas once flourishing trade days.

We offer a great selection of luxury rental accommodations including houses, villas, cabins and apartments. Our rentals feature saunas, hot tubs, swimming pools and a top quality maid service for an additional fee.
