Sardinia - Culture
The island of Sardinia is an ancient land, rich in the history – a vibrant history that influenced its culture and art. Here lies a great variety of artistic and architectural artifacts including monuments from over a vast period of time. Sardinia features architectural masterpieces from the prehistoric to the Punic Era. You will also see monuments from Roman, early Christian, and Romanesque periods up to the present day. Monuments from this island's ancient history are scattered all over the countryside.
A monument that is unique to Sardinia and still shrouded in mystery is the cone shaped tower, called Nuraghe. This tower reaches 20 metres in height. It was built with enormous stones laid in circles. Amazingly, it is held together without any mortar. Today there are more than 7,000 ancient monuments along the hilly countryside. These interesting structures make Sardinia the largest open air museum in the world.
Other monuments attest to the island's primeval history. For example, the 'dornus de jarias' known as home of the fairies is a series of small tombs excavated in the rocks. Other structures are made from enormous stones. Folklore from the island reflects a belief that these larger tombs were made to ward off giants. Traces of a once vibrant Phoenician city can be found today in Tharros. Visitors here will enjoy visiting the ancient Punic temple constructed between the 3rd and 4th centuries B.C. In the southern regions of Tharros and Nora, the Romans also left signs of their presence through ancient roads, buildings and temples. Under the rule of Augustus, temples, aqueducts, baths and amphitheatres were built here, many of which some portions still remain. This area also features enormous Romanesque cathedrals, built between 1100 and 1300. These cathedrals can be seen throughout Sardinia.
The region of Sardinia offers an abundance of natural resources, culture and folklore, ethnic musical traditions, plus plenty of poetry and literature in the Sardinian language. Also found here are museums and libraries filled with artifacts from the past. You will see priceless artisan handiwork, opulent cathedrals and many archaeological monuments. With its many magnificent towers, palaces, coastal fortresses, and ancient churches, Sardinia is surely a great place to spend a cultural vacation.
