Romania - Golf

Golf is a fairly new sport to Romania. It was illegal under the communist regime but has since gained much popularity. According to the Romanian Golf Federation, there were six golf courses in Romania before the Second World War, one in Bucharest (Bucharest Country Club first name of Diplomatic Club), two golf courses at the seaside (one at Mamaia and one at Eforie Nord), and one at Teleajen (designed by Americans) and one near Bucharest, at Buftea, (that belonged to Prince Stirbei). Two of them were destroyed during the war; the other four had been in use until 1948 when the communist regime decided to close them.

The only 18 hole golf course that existed in Romania during the communist period was the Diplomatic Club, which was designed by the English, golf professional G.T. Baker in 1937. During the communist period this Club had only 6 holes but it is expected to become a 9 hole course by 2008. The Diplomatic Club is located in beautiful Herastrau Park near central Bucharest.

After the war, Romania's first new golf course was designed by architect Andras Peres, with expert help from championship golfer Ronald Castillo, from Hawaii. The Lac de Verde Golf Complex was the first mountain resort in the Pravova Valley. The golf centre is located in Breaza, about 103km from Bucharest, Romania's capital. Recently, Lac de Verde has announced a five year commitment to developing Junior Golf. As part of their commitment, the complex now offers a golf camp and golf vacations for children.

Two public golf courses in Romania have received five star ratings. They are, the Premier Golf Club in Bucharest and The Golf Resort in Recas. Premier Golf Club offers the first indoor net driving range in Bucharest. Premier Golf Club is open late, so golfers can easily practice after business hours. Golfers are able to practice using any club they prefer, some smaller outside driving ranges require the use of Pitching Wedge when practicing. Visit their website for more information. The Golf Resort is a medium range 18 hole course and is not far from the Timisoara Airport and the Recas Railroad Station.
