Romania - Luxury

The country of Romania consists of nine regions, although their number, names and borders have changed throughout Romania's history. Reading from north to south, we have Maramures, Bucovina, Crisana, Transylvania, Moldavia, Banat, Oltenia, Muntenia, and Dobrogea.

Maramures, like much of Modern Romania, is not modern at all. It is a beautifully traditional, and carefully preserved region. Nowhere else on earth will you find people who, as a whole, share the Maramures philosophy, “To laugh about sorrow”. In addition to its fascinating culture, Maramures is also home to three ski resorts, including Borsa, where the largest ski jump in all of Europe is located. Also located in Borsa are some of Romania's best natural spas. As well as skiing, and then relaxing in pools of healing waters, popular adventure sports throughout Maramures include skydiving, kayaking, and rafting.

Bucovina is popular with tourists seeking a true cultural experience. Beautifully painted churches and monasteries dot the countryside. Bucovina is not an overtly luxurious region, it isn't meant to be. But the adventurous traveller will gladly welcome, and be welcomed by, the regions homely Romanian restaurants. Like Maramures, Bucovina's culture is very well preserved. Open markets are popular in the region, and the items being sold are usually hand crafted by the seller.

Crisana is known for its churches and architecture, as is all of Romania. There is also a very active theatre community in Crisana. If it is luxury you seek, stop by Crisana's famed Scorilo restaurant for upscale, but very Romanian, cuisine. Also worth visiting is the Felix Spa, located at the foot of the Padurea Craiului.

The land of Transylvania is like something from a fairytale. Still, it inspires terror in some as one the most common reasons to holiday in Transylvania, is to visit Dracula's Castle. Although you can also visit the castle from the inside, an aerial view, from helicopter, is absolutely breathtaking.

Moldavia is rich in culture with the many monasteries luring tourists from afar. Moldavia is also home to The Perla Moldovei, a relaxing, as well as healing, natural saltwater spa on the banks of Moldavia's Trotus River. In addition to its spa, and two especially famous restaurants, GinGer Ale, and Casa Pogor.

Banat is home to Timisoara, Romania's garden city. The beautiful flowers that fragrance the city have more than earned it its name. There is even a clock made almost entirely of flowers. Also worth visiting is the Huniade Castle, which houses the Banat Museum.

Oltenia is home to many of Romania's natural spas. Rimnicu Vilcea is Oltenia's most luxurious city, famous for its parks and restaurants. If you find yourself in Rimnicu Vilcea, make your way to Mr. Belvedere's for their famous crepes.

The Romanian Athenaeum is a must see stop on any tour of Muntenia. The breathtaking building is host to the George Enescu International Music Festival. Bucharest, Romania's capital city, is located in Muntenia, and is home to many luxury accomodations and restaurants. Tennis, ice skating, and skiing are just a few of the activites to be found in and around Bucharest. If you do plan to ski in Muntenia, Azuga is a luxurious and scenic spot. To hob nob with Romania's wealthy, nearby Busteni is the best choice for your ski holiday.

Dobrogea is the place for fun and sun in Romania. The Black Sea Coast of Dobrogea has been a popular luxury tourist stop since the nineteenth century. Spend your day exploring ancient ruins, and visiting a few museums, or water skiing over the coastal waters. Superb four star restaurants provide a good meal and a view of the beach.

Whether you seek culture or adventure, luxury or quaint traditions, one of Romania regions is sure to be the perfect choice for your next holiday from home.
