Aragon

Aragon’s rich and varied landscape ranges from the Pyrenees mountains, to the fertile Ebro river valley and the Los Monegros desert.

Set in the middle of the region, modern Zaragoza is an industrial centre with a thriving nightlife. It is also a 2000-year old city with treasures from every age. The miraculous appearance of the Virgin Mary to St James in the 1st century is commemorated by the medieval Nuestra Señora del Pilar Basilica, an important pilgrimage site. The Aljaferia – one of the most significant Moorish buildings in Spain – is currently occupied by the Aragon government.

With over half the Aragonese living in Zaragoza, the rest of the region is sparsely populated. Head south to Teruel for its magnificent Moorish architectural heritage in the Mudejar style and the San Martin, San Pedro and El Salvador churches. Huesca, at the foot of the Pyrenees, has many Romanesque and Gothic treasures.

The region’s cuisine is known for its pork, olive oil and delicious sweet pastries - Trenza de Almudévar - filled with almonds and raisins.
