Basque Country
Basque country is home to the Basque people, who are genetically unrelated to other European peoples and predate their arrival. The people have a completely separate language, culture and customs - including the sport called Basqueball.
It’s capital, Bilbao is now known around the world for its Guggenheim museum designed by Frank Gehry, but it has other architectural attractions ranging from its 13th century cathedral de Santiago to the 20th century Zubizuri or Campo Volantin footbridge suspended over the Nervion River.
San Sebastian, close to the French border, is an attractive resort city, with urban beaches that are growing in size as land is reclaimed.
Shop for your Basque products - such as the traditional cotton shirts and berets - in the busy shopping streets.
Basque food is excellent in quality and best sampled as tapas - or pinchos.
