Catalunya
Catalunya is home to the unique culture, language and heritage of the Catalans. Barcelona is a thriving cosmopolitan city, due in part to its importance as a Mediterranean port. Its architectural importance encompasses numerous Gothic and Romanesque treasures, together with the modernist creations of Antoni Gaudi.
For something completely different, head to the coast of the Costa Brava - with its small beaches interspersed with dramatic cliffs - or south to Sitges on the Costa Dorada.
In the mountains, visit the spectacular Romanesque monastery at Monserrat, which is tucked into the mountainside. Tarragona preserves many of its Roman antiquities, while Figueres was Salvador Dali’s birthplace and has an excellent museum dedicated to his work.
The region is rich in seafood and famous for its rice and olive oil. It is also the major producer of Cava sparkling wine.
