Eastern Switzerland

From the sparkling water of Lake Constance, to the hills and valleys of Appenzellerland, to the Rhine Valley, stretches the holiday region of eastern Switzerland.Walkers should head for the Glarus region, where hiking tracks wind their way up the Berglialp. The fresh alpine air is refreshing, and at the top a whey water bath is the perfect way to relax. The Berglialp area is renowned for its wellness therapies, and these suit groups, families, couples or individuals.

Families with children are drawn to eastern Switzerland. Braunwald, in the Glarus region, is car-free and family-friendly, and with horse-drawn sleighs and moderate weather, it is a magical wonderland. Braunwald has excellent ski facilities; 32 km of pistes and a great sledge run. There are walking trails and cafes galore, and plenty of space for children to play, so all visitors will feel at home.

Chasserrugg is one of the best-known ski regions in the Toggenburg and for children there is a playground with a trampoline, slides and ropeway. In the summer, visitors can bathe in a natural pond in the middle of St Gallen, an hours drive east from Zurich. A climbing wall has 30 routes of varying difficulties, and in winter ice skating, a curling hall and public heated pools are on offer. Golf is also a popular activity throughout the region.

Grisons is a rugged mountainous area in eastern Switzerland with more than 150 valleys. It is home to renowned resorts such as Klosters, and skiing facilities here are some of the world's best.

The Engadine valley in southeastern Switzerland, is famous for its castles, fortresses, countless churches and chapels which reflects its long and rich history. Appenzell, in the northeastern part of Switzerland, is ideal for hiking tours. Soak up the medieval atmosphere of Stein am Rhein, a picturesque town in the region. Boat trips on Lake Constance to Friedrichshafen in Germany are great for families and couples alike.
