Western Switzerland

Switzerland is known as the paradise of Europe, and the western side of the country is one of the most picturesque regions.

The Franches Montagnes in the Neuchâtel region and the foothills of the Alps in Fribourg are excellent for hiking, camping and fishing. In Fribourg, the Gottéron Valley provides a network of walks. See stone-cutters at work or observe the trout at the fish farm along the way. Fribourg also offers great skiing.

Fishing enthusiasts will love the western region, with fly-fishing, spinning, and ground fishing permitted in most waters. Fishing permits are required and vary in price according to area.

La Pierreuse is the largest nature reserve in the western Switzerland. Situated in the alpine foothills on the left bank of the Sarine River, the 34sq km park stretches along the Gummfluh and Pic Chaussy mountain ranges. It is great for hiking and visitors may be lucky enough to see golden eagles, falcons, and black grouse. Always take plenty of water, food and warm clothing, and tell someone where you're going.

Geneva is a cosmopolitan city home to a lot of Roman architecture such as the Cathedral St Pierre Genève. Stroll through the city or around the lake, and enjoy the vibrant nightlife. Mont Salève, south of the city, is a popular mountaineering destination. Skiing and skating are popular winter activities here.

Slow-paced Lausanne is on the northern shores of Lake Geneva, and a great place to spend a short break. The small town of Romainmotier features the 11th century Benedictine monastery Church of St Pierre.

Summer skiing on the glacier here is popular, and rafting or hydro speeding down the Sarine from Château d'Oex is the area's pioneering sport.

In the northwest, Baselland is home to unique attractions of its own, including the aerial cable car at Wasserfallen that provides access to marvellous hikes through the Jura Mountains. It is well-known for its varied cuisine, and is a paradise for hiking, biking and lama trekking. It is also rich in local traditions.

Entfelden Golf Club, in northwestern Switzerland, is a great place to enjoy the sun while you play. The course is sandwiched between the Rhein River and the Jura mountains. Villars Golf Club is also popular.
